Dear Coach, Parents, Players

Best of luck in the 2015 22nd Annual JAM Spring League tournament. As we wind down the Spring season, it in now time to register for the Dave Hopla Shooting Clinic Memorial Day weekend, the JAM / Earl Boykins Basketball Academy summer camps in June and the JAM summer tournament series.

Remember Our #1 priority for JAM continues helping coaches and parents build confidence in today’s youth. Continue setting goals to make sure plans are in line to improve your game.

WHY SHOOTING IS IMPORTANT - SHOOTING 101
As you no doubt know, among the factors that make the most difference in the game of basketball, shooting percentage has to be at the very top of the list. There are many valid reasons to become a great shooter, but let’s cut them down to 3 important points on why shooting is a major skill for players to improve on this summer.

Good shooters completely change how your offense works and make it easy and simple to get lay ups.

Offensive minded coaches that have great shooters on the floor understand that every offensive scheme works as long as the players create space and pass correctly to open shooters. Just by having the threat of a good shooter stretches out the defense and causes them to cover more ground. Good shooters open up driving lanes for everyone on the team and make it easier to score. However, if nobody on the floor can shoot, the defense will pack things in (sag on team defense) and make it more difficult to score inside. Bottom line is great shooters STRETCH out the defense.

Good shooting can get you more playing time! This is what ever basketball player in the world can not get enough of - Playing Time! With all other factors and skills being equal, players who shoot at a higher percentage usually get most of the playing time! It's simple; coaches want great shooters on the court. Of course they want good defensive players, passers, and rebounders on the floor too. But great shooters are hard to come by and coaches are always searching for a good shooter in order to spread the floor and make open jumpshots. Great shooting can make you a super valuable player that the coaches want on the floor as much as possible.

A tiny improvement in your percentage will contribute towards winning more games! Teams that shoot at a higher percentage give themselves a tremendous competitive advantage. All other factors being equal, it's clear as glass that the better shooting team will win. Let's review and step into math class and see why statistically this it true. Taking 78 points as a target example, how many made shots are needed? Well, you'll need to make 39 two-pointers. If your team shoots 40%, then you'll have to generate about 98 two-point attempts. But suppose your team shoots only 30% from the field. For two-pointers, you will now need to generate 130 shot attempts to reach 78 points - That's 32 more attempts than you needed with the team shooting at 40%!

As one can easily see, if your team's shooting percentage falls by 10%, then the team will have to increase rebounds or forced turnovers dramatically to reach the same point total. Obviously, we can all see that shooting at a higher percentage makes winning much more attainable.

So to conclude. From both perspectives, team and individual, shooting at a relatively high percentage is a critically important goal. As a coach, player, or parent, you will want to do everything possible to build up your team's or your youngster's shooting percentage.

Now that we've taken a quick look at how important shooting at a high percentage is, you are probably anxious to learn all that you can about developing this vital skill. The Dave Hopla shooting clinic at Manual High School on May 23rd and 24th, is the best place on the planet to begin seeing instant improvement. Look for a flyer at the gym this weekend and we will see you Memorial Day Weekend!

- Mark Sharpley

Vice President of basketball operations for the LA Clippers and former NBA assistant with the World Champion Boston Celtics Kevin Eastman has taken time out from his busy schedule to offer up some tips to help players improve their workout quality and effectiveness. These tips can help develop skills while having fun learning to play great basketball. The following are his six keys to quality shooting work;

1.Practice at a rate equal to or faster than that which will occur in a game.
2.Understand it is a process to improve and conditioning and effective practice habits help improvement.
3.Eliminate workout killers such as fatigue and boredom.
4.Write everything down! Have a written workout plan.
5.Work on three areas every day; conditioning, dribbling, shooting.
6.Understand the theory of two: Two minutes to show you – Two weeks to be comfortable – Two months to use in a game.

Working on your game is not an easy thing, but below are tips to help you work on your overall practice habits as well as some shooting drills that can help you become an improved shooter. The general theme of these drills is to work hard and at game speed, while also maintaining form to your shot. Work on these skills and we have no doubt that you'll become a better player.

1. Catch & Shoot (Spot Ups) - Catch and shoot is the best way to start a good shooting workout. It allows you to get into a rhythm and work on form with minimal movement. Simply pick a few spots, usually five going around the horn, and shoot ten shots from each spot. Have a rebounder giving you good outlet passes, and remember that although you're not moving at a rapid pace around the floor, it is important to shoot shots at game speed.

2. Cut - Catch - Shoot - Now that you have a good sweat and rhythm going, it's time to move to cut-catch-shoot. In this drill you'll need a passer at the top of the key to give you the entry pass. Start foul line extended and use a "V" cut (running to the low block and cutting back out towards the wing) to get yourself open. Remember to set the defender up when making the "V". You want to walk the defender down to the low block, then quickly cut back out. After receiving the entry pass square up and shoot your shot. Do this drill on both sides of the court at game speed.

3. Shots Off The Dribble - This drill is similar to the above, but this time after catching the entry pass, take a few dribbles right and pull up for your jump shot, then repeat going to the left. As always make sure you go game speed.

4. Perfect The Form On All Shooting Drills - Another key to a good shooting workout is using proper form on each drill. That's why we want to go game speed, so we're used to using perfect form in game conditions. If you don't go at game speed, when you do get into a game your form will be off.

5. Contest All Shots - These drills will be much more productive if you can find a partner to contest your shots. In game situations you most likely will have a hand in your face when you shoot, so practicing that way will allow you to adjust to game situations. If you can't find a partner, use a chair or trash can to shoot behind.

6. Game Shots From Game Spots At Game Speed - Game speed has been a theme throughout this workout plan. Practicing at game speed is vital to your workout regimen. If you don't work on game situations at the same speed as you would in a game then your practice will not translate to games, and you're basically wasting your time.

FOUR "MUST HAVES" IN YOUR DRILL WORK
1. Weak Hand Development - It's imperative, if you want to become a better basketball player, that you learn how to use your weak hand. If you're right handed you must be able to make the same moves going left and vice verse. As a young player, this will separate you from the competition. So when you're working out, make sure you do your drills going both ways.

2. Footwork & Balance Emphasis - Footwork and balance are key in the game of basketball. Good footwork can mean the difference between having an open jump-shot and a contested jump shot. Balance is also very important. If you watch the great shooters in the NBA, they are almost always squared up and balanced when taking their shots.

3. Playing through Contact - another "must have" in your workout is learning to finish plays, as well as getting open, with contact. If you have a friend or family member that can bump you as you make your "V" cuts, or bump you when you go up for a shot, you'll see the results when you get bumped in your games.

4. Contesting Shots - If you have a partner available for your workout, contest each other's shots. In your games you're going to have defense and you're going to have to shoot with a hand in your face, so it's important to simulate this in your workout.

Best of luck this season - see you on the court.

11 Championship Habits
Many coaches are thankful for the opportunity to work with their players and team for a significant amount of time. Learning important aspects such as the pulse of how their players are doing (mentally and physically).

Coach Alan Stein is heading into his fifth season at DeMatha and has learned first-hand what it takes for a program to be successful consistently. While no one would never argue how helpful it is to have very talented players (and DeMatha most certainly does), Coach Stein has learned it is actually the little things that make a big difference. It is the little things that make an average team a good team, a good team a great team and great team a championship team. These little things are known as “Championship Habits.”

However, the key is not to focus on winning a championship (outcome based). The key is to focus on developing these championship habits (process based). That is a powerful distinction.

Here are some self-evaluating questions that every player and coach in every program needs to answer honestly to maximize the team’s potential. These 11 questions will clue you in to your team’s commitment to championship habits.

And while it is important for you to know the answers to these questions, it is equally important for everyone else in your program to know them as well.

1. What are your team’s goals (or standards) for this season?

2. Does everyone in your program know their exact role? Do they accept it and embrace it?

3. Does everyone prepare for practice with the same mentality they prepare for games?

4. Do you believe on any given night that any team can beat you? Do you believe you can beat anyone?

5. Is your team on top of their schoolwork? Will academics be a distraction during the season?

6. Is your team getting ample sleep, eating breakfast, drinking plenty of water and appropriately tending to injuries every day?

7. Does your team get to practice 15 minutes early to get in extra shooting and ball handling work? Do they stay after practice as well?

8. During practice, is everyone an energy giver? Is your enthusiasm contagious?

9. Does your team warm-up properly before all practices and games?

10. Does your team continue to strength train during the season?

11. Does your team exercise the pillars of teamwork both on and off the court?

Dear Coach, Parents, and Players

Thank you all for a tremendous fall season! Great luck to all during the winter months. As we fast approach the holiday season enjoy time with family and friends. Student/athletes continue to work hard in the class room and in the gym. Coaches continue to make a point of emphasis that each student/athlete is having fun, learning the fundamentals and important aspects of the game, while gaining a passion for the sport. This month’s addition of the JAM newsletter will focus on the importance of “Get to Attitude vs. Have to Mentality. Do not forget this weekend is the Dave Hopla shooting clinic. There are still spots available for the Saturday, Sunday 9am-3pm clinic at Manual HS. Registration for all JAM events is available on-line.

Get to / Have to

Who knew that four simple words could change one’s mindset, perspective and approach to work, life, and play? Just four words have the potential to enhance joy, productivity, performance and change a complaining voice to an appreciative heart.

So often we say things like, "I have to go to practice." "I have to go to school today." "I have to finish this project." "I have to go to work today." "I have to do chores for my family." "I have to share this new information with my team." "I have to spend time with my parents."

We act as if we don’t have a choice. As if we are imprisoned by the expectations of a world that forces us to do thing we don’t want to do. But in reality we do have a choice. We can choose our attitude and our actions. We can choose how we view our life and work. We can realize that every day is a gift. It’s not about what we have to do. It’s about what we get to do.

We get to use our gifts and talents to become better at our craft. We get to eat three meals a day while millions of people are starving. We get to work on projects, do homework, serve others, participate in practice, design, create, share, lead and suit up every day for the game of life.

Yes there will be challenges and life isn’t easy but each day we wake up we get another opportunity to make today better than yesterday and tomorrow better than today. We get to uplift, inspire, encourage, and impact others. We get to live this life. Let’s make the most of it by remembering that life is a gift not an obligation.

Dear Coach, Parents, Players

Hope your season is progressing along as planned. Team practice, organization, strategy, and player development are all on your plate. Making sure every student/athlete is having fun and gaining a passion for the game are vital aspects of running a ball club. This month’s addition of the JAM newsletter focus includes highlighting upcoming events. Three big events on the horizon include JAM Halloween Monster Bash Tournament October 25-26. The Dave Hopla shooting Clinic November 8-9 (link below shows Dave's record breaking August NBA distance amazing accomplishment), and The BAC Colorado Fall Shootout. Registration for all JAM events is available on-line.

Here are two ideas for basketball shooting drills. The first one is an emphasis on technique, focus and fundamentals. The second is more of a toughness drill requiring the shooter to make shots when tired while having the pressure of making consecutive shots.

We hope you find ways to tweak these shooting drills to fit your philosophy and that you can use them in your skill work outs or in your regular season shooting drills.

The rebounder should be ready to rebound all shots without the ball hitting the ground. The passer can be located at any spot where passes come from in your offensive system. Reggie Miller frequently came off screens from the basket out, but that might not fit your scheme. Remember shooters get shots from many spots and the floor and can be moved anywhere that makes cuts from in your offense.

Emphasize to the shooter to make game-like cuts, including changing speeds and directions while making the cuts. The shooter will receive the ball for a catch and shoot shot, or some kind of one dribble pull up shot. After one minute is up, the players will rotate passer, rebounder, and shooter.

For all drills the shooter should work on the cuts that you use within your offensive system. The Passer concentrates on timely on target passes–and not traveling when delivering the ball. Rebounder’s job is to get the rebound before it hits the floor. I like the idea of adding a point to the score each time the rebounder accomplishes that task and subtracting points for bad passes.

Surfs Up – Ride The Momentum Wave - Staying motivated! The lifelong question for all of us: How can I keep myself motivated long term? This seems to be quite a common dilemma for many people so let’s address the big MO – because it can be done!

Every day – We Must Take Initiative. Our basic nature is to act, and not to be acted upon. Becoming self-reliant empowers us with the ability to create our own circumstances. Taking the initiative means to recognize our responsibility to make things happen. One certain way to become a better basketball player, student, or business professional is to seize the initiative to do whatever is necessary. Be consistent with correct principles and then straight get the job done. Although proactive muscles may be dormant, they are there.

Have A Vision – The difference between people who exercise vision and those who don’t is literally the difference between night and day. It takes vision to create the balance of effectiveness in our lives. Set out a vision and a strategy for getting there. Have a plan and work the plan.

Fuel Your Passion – Much of motivation is emotional. Emotion is a powerful force in getting us going. Passion is an emotion, so fuel you passion. Set your self on a course to have a consuming desire for your goal, whatever it is. Do whatever you can to feel the emotion and use it to your advantage!

Work Hard Enough To Get Results – The harder you work, the more results you will see. If you want to gain court time, learn to defend, pass, handle the rock, build business skills, taking the path of least resistance will not get you there. The hard work road of the less traveled is the only path. One step at a time climb the staircase of hard work.

Put Good Materials Into Your Mind – Our circles of influence play a significant role in our ability to become or stay motivated. This circle of influence must be proactive and positive. Listening to other accomplishments motivates many to create their own success. Choose friends wisely! Coach Bill Peterson once said, “Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.”

Ride The Momentum When It Comes - Sometimes life will roll smooth and sometimes it won’t. It is all a cycle. When things don’t seem to be operating smoothly and obstacles of adversity seem insurmountable, plug away. When things are in a groove, pour it on because momentum will help you get larger gains in a shorter period of time with less energy. That is the momentum equation. Remember these simple principles. Like Famous basketball star Bill Walton said, “Life is like the ocean. In order to survive, you must learn to ride the waves.”

Synergistic Offensive and Defensive Philosophies from the coaching toolbox

Earlier this week while reading some clinic notes from Mike Dunlap this is something he asks at coaching clinics -“does your defense compliment your offense?” and further asked the questions “Does your offense compliment your defense”. Basketball can not be broken up into two sides of the ball like you can in football, the demands you make on one side of the court effect the execution on the other. Coaches want to develop their offense and defense to work synergistically. Different combined offensive and defensive systems revolve around three factors – depth, talent, and coaching philosophy.

Depth - If you have a team with a lot of depth, you want your defense and offense to maximize pressure on our opponent so conditioning becomes a factor. For example, VCU has an up tempo offensive and defensive system. Their defense leads the NCAA in turnovers forced with their full court “Swarm” pressure. This defensive system is married with an attacking/up tempo offensive attack. With constant offensive and defensive pressure they wear down an opponent physically and mentally and utilize that depth.

Teams that don’t have great depth cannot play a high energy type of offense and defense. I have heard Dick Bennett (and now his son is emulating his father to some extent) talk about how he ran the Blocker-Mover offense to slow down the tempo a keep their players fresh. With this thought in mind, they play a Pack Line Defense which does to extend beyond the 3 point line, thus conserves the energy of their players.

Coaching Philosophy - Certain coaches are offensive coaches while others are defensive coaches. With this in mind, they will focus their time and energy on one side of the court at the expense of the other. This translates that you might teach a simple offense so you can focus on your defense or visa versa.

An example of this is Gary William’s Maryland teams, he ran a simplistic offense known as the flex so that he could have the time to perfect his half court man, half court zone, full and ¾ court pressure systems. He was known as a pressure defense coach and he really emphasized the flex as an offense because he believed it got the ball inside that lead to his team getting to the line. Thus he was able to set up on full court pressure defenses. An example of an offensive team would be Notre Dame, If you look up All Access Notre Dame Practice with Mike Brey, the vast majority of their practice time is spent on their motion and teaching offensive concepts. With this in mind, they run very simple man and zone defenses without much attention to detail. This offensive focused team philosophy works to the skills of the coach and his players.

Personnel - By personnel we mean the type of players that make up a team. Some teams might be smaller in size with a collection of guards, thus they cannot expect to rebound the ball as well as some teams. Their defense might be tilted toward forcing turnovers and their offense might look to take advantage of the driving and shooting ability of these guards. An example of this might be the 4 guard teams that Villanova teams of 5 years ago. Bigger teams, might look to have a more controlled offense that looks to minimize their bigs touching the ball in high turnover positions so that they can focus on their rebounding advantage, while their defense would looks to challenge shots and own the boards. An example of this might be Baylor which uses their length in one of the great zones in basketball.

Best of luck in the post season and don't forget to register for our upcoming summer events!
This Weeks Message - 5 Ways for Basketball Players to Improve Immediately

Like most people, many basketball players are looking for that one thing that will create an immediate impact for themselves and their team. Let’s take a look at five things any player can do to gain immediate improvement:

1. Take Higher Percentage Shots - All basketball coaches love having a good shooter on their team. The way to instantly improve your shooting percentage is to eliminate shots that are difficult to make. If that seems simple, it is. It’s amazing how an athlete can appear to be a good (or better) shooter when they stop taking shots they don’t make very often. To evaluate your shot, ask yourself these three key questions: Was your shot on balance? Was your shot within range? Was your shot in rhythm?

If the answer is ‘no’ to any of these questions, you have attempted a shot that will make you a less efficient shooter. In addition, the shots you are taking will cause your teammates and coach to lose confidence in you. Earn your coach and teammate’s trust through your shot selection. It’s been said that it doesn’t matter how beautiful a swing a baseball/softball player has. If their always swinging at bad pitches, their batting average will be embarrassingly low. The same applies in basketball. It doesn’t matter how sweet your stroke looks if you constantly shoot poor shots. Eliminating poor shots during a game can increase your shooting percentage significantly. Good coaches love that.

2. Increase your Activity on Defense - Imagine before your next defensive possession, you step into a tray of bright pink paint. How much of your team’s backcourt would be covered by your footprints? I have the pleasure of observing high school and college basketball players across North America. The vast majority might only sprinkle a few footprints across their side of the court.

It’s amazing how many more steals, leather touches (deflections), bothered passes, altered shots, and tipped rebounds basketball players could get if they would just ‘PAINT THE FLOOR.’ Paint the floor with your feet, always be moving, and cover the court with your activity. This is the universal sign of a good defender. Your defensive coverage is immediately adjustable. It requires no training or practice. It only requires a commitment of focused effort. Become pretty in pink.

3. Increase your Talk - Dale Carnegie has said, “Communication enhances every human experience.” Saying you’ll do something makes you more likely to actually do it. If I tell my check before a game that I won’t give them an easy shot all night, I’m more likely to be hell-bent on making their evening as difficult as possible. If you want to be a better help side defender, communicate emphatically that you have your teammate’s help on a dribble drive. If you want to make more lay-ups around the rim, run down the floor telling the ball-handler you have the finish. If you desire to achieve something, say it. You are more likely to hold yourself to the standard you set.

4. Make Contact With Someone - “Honestly, you’re just too physical. You’re too tough. You box out too hard and screen too rough. You are so physical on defense that I think you need to back it off a little bit to be more effective.” NO ONE HAS EVER HEARD THESE WORDS! All athletes can find ways to be more physical. Tomorrow you can be a better defender, screener, driver of the basketball, and rebounder if you physically within all the content of the rules make contact with SOMEONE. Make contact with your hip, shoulder, forearms, and tail section. Basketball players who excel in this game thrive by learning how to create contact to create advantages. Bump, nudge, check, shiver, and move your opponent the entire game – both on offense and defense. This will make you instantly tougher to guard, more difficult to box out, more challenging to post up on, more frustrating to play
against, and completely indispensable to your coach.

5. Question Yourself - Few athletes constantly question themselves. Most just react to the situation or experience during a game. I will offer you – the motivated athlete – this challenge. At your next basketball practice question yourself each moment there’s a stoppage to breathe and think. Which question should you ask? “Is there anything more I can do?” You will always get the same answer: Yes! Then DO IT. Do it immediately. Do it again. Make it a habit. Average athletes are always satisfied with what they have done previously. Elite athletes live in a state where they are always asking themselves how they can increase their contribution. Become anxious and hold your feet to the fire. You will be amazed at how many things you recognize that you could be doing to improve your game. As you continue to perform better, the amazement will spread to your coach and teammates. Never fail to ask yourself this crucial question: “Is there anything more I can do?”

Basketball Fundamentals:

The fundamentals of basketball are the most important thing to master. The reason being, solid basic fundamentals will make you and your team better no matter what age level or situation that occurs on the court.

There is conclusive evidence why the best college, NBA, and top ranked coaches around the globe spend the majority of their practices on solid fundamentals.

A basketball player if faced with a variety of difficult situations:
Different team’s use different tactics including pressing, switching defenses, how they play the post, how they attack in transition, and on the glass.

Coaches and players face opponents that have individually and collectively scouted you and your team’s offense and defensive schemes inside and out. Plus you will see opponents and styles you have never faced before.

No doubt we see different levels of competition from youth recreation leagues, competitive youth leagues, middle school, high school, college,
and professionally.

Players will play for different coaches that have very different coaching styles. An example is a player may have a middle school coach that implements a press, and then as they move forward their high school coach plays zone defense and then adversely their club team coach only plays man defense. Coaches may play a fast paced style of offense, or a slow tempo. Players could literally see a dozen different offenses and defensive schemes throughout their basketball career.

There are many different situations that coaches and players face. And the one consistent element that works against all situations no matter the age level or team is being well schooled and skilled in the fundamentals. The following list is items that make the best teams and players.

Individually:
Shooting correctly, being proficient from the free throw line, developing a signature move and counter moves, correct passing technique including velocity on your pass, working on ball handling series, footwork ability (including pivoting, jab steps, and jump stops) attacking the glass, defensive slides, post play, guard development, cutting and moving without the ball.

A few team concepts include:
Defensive schemes and rotations, ball and player movement, screening (how to set and receive screens), executing pick and roll and pick and pop basketball to name a few:

Great luck this season and we will see you on the court.
