Welcome to the start of another J.A.M. Basketball season. We've already had a few games played, and the rest of the league will be underway soon enough. Some important items you might like to heed: Make sure your coach has picked up his/her team packet, check out and utilize our incredible web site and all of its features, read our list of game rules, be respectful to referees and our facilities, make it an enjoyable atmosphere for your children, and encourage all players to be their best!
One thing to keep in mind this season is what success means to you. Every player, every coach, every team and person should strive for their own successes in life. To have the best opportunity to achieve this success, I'd suggest defining what success means to you first. Below is a little something that might help. Have a great season, guys!
Old School Success: Positive Values
Values are like an integrated compass—they help point the way to thinking and acting appropriately. Six positive values that are central to healthy development include: caring, integrity, responsibility, equality and social justice, respect, and restraint. Research has discovered that positive values in a child’s life are associated with higher levels of positive behavior, improved problem-solving skills, greater overall well-being, outstanding competence, achieving better grades and test scores, and choosing friends who make positive life choices. If we teach kids to help another person, that’s a positive value. When kids stand up for another child, even though it’s a hard thing to do, that’s also a positive value. Once the foundation and framework has been established, kids will continue to learn about and build positive values for years to come.
