A Coach’s Guide to Winning JAM Games

A Coach’s Guide to Winning JAM Games
written by Chris Curneen

Basketball is basketball. My favorite John Wooden maxim is “Big things are accomplished only through the perfection of minor details”. If you focus on winning the JAM Tournament rather than focusing on improving and getting better, it is not likely to happen. You can make winning the tournament a goal but, the way to accomplish it is to work hard at improving as a team and/or a player. Consistently we have teams that begin at the bottom of the standings their first season that just work hard and get better with every game and/ or practice, eventually they become better players and their team climbs the ranks. They eventually improve to the point that the win a tournament title and when you watch them you know why. They are focused on getting better and being the best team they can be. The best teams are always the teams that focus on improving and get better every time they step on the court. Every year there are quite a few teams that play in the JAM Spring and Fall League and then go on to win a High School State Title. The reason that they accomplish these lofty goals is because they are focused on getting better and being the best they can be. Their process begins as a team in April and culminates the following March and every time they get together on the court their focus is on improving. The end result is only accomplished through perfecting the minor details.
