The Difference: Boys vs. Girls Basketball

The Difference: Boys vs. Girls Basketball
written by Chris Curneen

After having coached both girls and boys the biggest difference is obvious. A Girls team room smells a whole lot better than the Boys team room does! There are obviously other differences but the game is the same in most aspects. The team that works the hardest, is most fundamentally sound, and plays together as a team usually wins. There are some differences in approaches, things that must be emphasized, and ways to motivate that are different between the genders. Still, the game always goes back to the basics. With either gender, there are players and teams that set themselves apart with the way they work, develop, and focus on their objective. There are differences in the speed of the game, the styles that can be played, and at the higher levels the way the game is played above or below the rim.

Motivations are a huge difference. Boys usually are highly motivated by the aspect of the NBA and its money, to the point where some are willing to make basketball their number one priority more often than a girl is. This increases the game of all those around him like a domino effect. The girls that are motivated enough to reach a high level must survive the onslaught of unmotivated girls surrounding them, which usually lowers their play. The true greats are rare on both sides, which has got to change. Players willing to give their heart for their passion regardless of any rewards. Girls caring less about playing with their best friends and caring more about playing the game regardless. Boys caring less about the money and fame and caring more about the game regardless. There are a lot more similarities than there are differences. However, the biggest difference is... the way the team room smells.
