J.A.M. Newsletter: 5/17/11

J.A.M. Newsletter: 5/17/11

This is my final spring 2011 note to you. I will continue sending monthly newsletters throughout the summer. Congrats to our Varsity and JV Champions crowned this past weekend. Sunday was filled with over-time and buzzer beating finals. We would love to send a quick shout-out and thank you to our coaches, players, our fantastic parents, and hard working referees for all of your hard work for JAM Basketball this spring!

I hope you have seen us in your e-mail inbox – Jon and Ron have made it possible for us to e-mail our members every week with updates and your feedback has been very positive. If you are not receiving these, sign up at www.jamball.com --- Jon continues to work on and provides amazing information for our website!

Remember this weekend the door charge covers awards, t-shirts, and program costs for the league.

And finally, please click on this week’s links below regarding our shooting clinician Dave Hopla. After viewing the clips, register your son/daughter on line for the Dave Hopla clinic Memorial Day weekend. Spots are still available. Don’t forget, Jon has organized two outstanding summer camps for your child as well. Please get registered for our very beneficial skill camps. Please send any photos of this season, so we may include them on our website. We are aiming to increase our membership and are organizing some special fall events. I invite you to participate and learn more about the fascinating basketball opportunities coming your way. Best of luck this weekend!

Few people have impacted the world of Coaching and Sport like Rod Olson, a gregarious, sought-after, speaker and prominent author, coach, and consultant. He is universally characterized by friends, colleagues, and clients as one of the most insightful, powerful, and compelling speakers today. Rod, or “Coach O” as he is usually called, is an author, speaker and coach of coaches. Here are a few words from Rod Olson pertaining to leadership:

THE BIG 8

1. Leaders Communicate Constantly It is always the responsibility of the more mature person to initiate communication, especially when the pupil moves into a position of leadership. Daily input and feedback is crucial.

2. Leaders Provide Laboratories Great teachers and coaches allow their students to learn in controlled situations or laboratories. Do you intentionally put your people in safe learning environments to help them learn to lead? Great Leaders do!

3. Leaders Provide Compasses not Road Maps Leaders must learn to find answers for themselves, great mentors provide guidance not step by step directions. Don't create robots create leaders.

4. Leaders Create Communities of Support Leaders are committed to teaching that isolation doesn't work. No one can lead alone, so they intentionally unite their leaders with other leaders that are at similar stages of development to create community where deeper learning can occur and a network of support is developed.

5. Leaders Know More is Caught than is Taught The best way to learn is to be with the master as he or she teaches and handles issues. Do you let your future leaders shadow you so they can imitate what they see? If they are with you they will remember!

6. Leaders Go on the Pupils Turf and Coach Them Great leaders understand the key to development is not a title or a promotion, but a PROCESS! Are you coaching your people to greatness or managing their progress? We must go to them and be with them on their turf!

7. Great Leaders Evaluate, Discern, Challenge In order to maximize talent a Leader must evaluate the pupil's progress weekly, monthly and quarterly. Our job is to help the future leader discern what their true gifts are and aren't. Lastly, we must challenge the pupil to deeper levels of growth by giving them a vision for their future.

8. Leaders Love Unconditionally and Provide Wings The greatest gift a parent can receive is to see their children become excellent parents. We are no different, if we can empower our pupils by affirming them and by letting them know that we will always be cheering them on to great things and we will always love them...unconditionally.

A Word to the Wise
"The task of the leader is to get his people from where they are to where they have not been."
~ Vince Lombardi
